Deep cranberry color. Tight nose with just a hint of smoke. Tart raspberry and some surprising green apple flavors make this an interesting wine, well worth trying at $5.
I got to sample this a couple of weeks ago when one of the TJ's wine folks opened a bottle. I agree with the positive review. This is a very light bodied red, and I usually go for medium to full. The first thing I thought when I tasted this was "A nice red wine for summer."
I just opened my first bottle of Zafrika Pinotage. It is one of the best wines [of any type] that I have ever tasted at this price range. Tomorrow I'm going back to Trader Joe's to buy a case of it.
Elaine, your best bet on finding this wine is your local Trader Joe's. If you don't see it on the shelf, be sure to ask. Most of the TJ's wine folks are quite helpful.
I love Pinotage in general. This was so bad I actually poured it down the sink. If you want a good full bodied, spicy, red wine, try the Pinotage by Man Vinters. 6.99 per bottle generally. Still cheap but worlds better than this really weak, dishwater wine.
have to completely agree with cron on this one- you can hardly call this vino. the "smoke" and "green apple" flavours you might be tasting are more than likely the result of very high yields and extreme youth. these flavours hardly translate to anything worth drinking. i love a a good bargain wine, but this one is best overlooked.
The criticism it's a little harsh, the hint of green apple stands out but it's not overpowering. It is a good wine if you're trying out what South Africa has to offer.
